A New Bridge at Crown Point, Lake Champlain

A prologue:

New York State Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy and Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin presided over the ribbon cutting of the brand new Lake Champlain Bridge, which connects Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison, Vt., at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011.

The original Crown Point Bridge was built in 1929, one of only two bridges connecting the two States. It was a toll bridge when built. The toll was removed in 1987. The bridge, limited to only one lane because of deterioriation of the supporting piers, was demolished on December 28, 2009.

Only the bridge piers remain. The superstructure has been removed. Progress was slow because of the wintery conditions.

The center span has been assembled (floated on barges and successfully lifted into position by two cranes). Opening the span is only a little over a month away.
